The Directorate for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora of the Riyasat of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the support of the Federal Ministry for Displaced Persons and Refugees, has continued a series of panels and exhibitions in European countries titled "The World Remembers Srebrenica: Lessons from the Genocide in Europe."
On Friday, June 28, 2024, an exhibition and panel were held at the Theaterzaal Ledeberg in Ghent, Belgium. This and other events, as part of the project The World Remembers Srebrenica (remember.ba), aim to raise awareness about the horrors of the Srebrenica genocide and promote dialogue on the importance of preventing similar tragedies in the future.
The event began with a reception and the opening of the exhibition, which features photographs, documents, and artifacts related to the Srebrenica Genocide, providing visitors with a deep insight into the events of July 1995. The panel was held after introductory speeches by Muhamed Jusić, Director of the Directorate for Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Berzad Pašanović, representative of the VZW Ensarija community in Belgium, and H.E. Erol Avdović, Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Kingdom of Belgium.
At the panel, Dr. Hikmet Karčić, a genocide researcher at the University of Sarajevo and the author of the mentioned exhibition, shared his insights on the Srebrenica Genocide and its significance for contemporary Europe. His lecture covered the historical circumstances leading up to the Genocide, current efforts to preserve the memory, and the lessons the world can learn from this tragic event.
Following the lecture, a dialogue session with the audience was moderated by Hanna Karalić. This session provided an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and share their thoughts on the topic of genocide. Among other topics, the discussion included ways to prevent the recurrence of such crimes and how to support the reconciliation process. The event concluded with an informal gathering where guests continued the conversation, aiming to further exchange ideas and experiences among the participants.
One of the conclusions of the program highlighted the role of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has been crucial in preserving the memory of the victims and promoting the reconciliation process. After the Genocide, the Islamic Community has been providing spiritual support to survivors and helped in the construction of the Memorial Center in Srebrenica.
