Exhibition and forum "The World Remembers Srebrenica" held in Skopje

As part of the "The World Remembers Srebrenica" project, organized by the Directorate for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of the Riyasat of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, an exhibition of the same name was opened in Skopje on June 3rd. Alongside the exhibition, a forum was held, and awards were presented for the best student literary works on the theme "Srebrenica."

The exhibition "The World Remembers Srebrenica," created by Dr. Hikmet Karčić, showcases ten stages of the genocide through a display of photographs that testify to the horrors of the genocide, as well as the resilience of the survivors and their fight for justice and truth.

Muhamed Jugo, representing the Directorate for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Prof. Dr. Seyhan Murtezan Ibrahimi, Vice-Rector for Education at the International Balkan University, spoke about the events of July 1995 in Srebrenica and the role of the Islamic Community in preserving the memory of the genocide victims.

They reminded that the Islamic Community, together with the international community and state institutions, helped establish the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

At the same time, over the past two decades, the Islamic Community, through interreligious dialogue and cooperation, has promoted understanding, empathy, and solidarity among different communities, emphasizing common values of peace, justice, and human dignity. The message from the organizers is that confronting the truth about Srebrenica and accountability for the crimes are crucial for justice and reconciliation, while denial of the Genocide and glorification of war criminals pose a serious threat to justice and peace. Therefore, continuous remembrance of the victims, solidarity, and the fight against crime denial are necessary to prevent future genocides.

Azra Efendić Eminović, an expert associate in the Directorate for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, emphasized the importance of this literary and artistic competition, not only in the context of remembering the Genocide but also because it strengthens the identity of Bosniaks in North Macedonia.

This event is just one of the activities of the Directorate for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of the Riyasat of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which are being carried out and will continue in the coming months following the adoption of the resolution by the UN General Assembly establishing the International Day of Reflection and Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica in 1995.

Part of the activities within the "The World Remembers Srebrenica" campaign in several Western European cities will be realized with the support of the Federal Ministry of Displaced Persons and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
