Tolimir was found guilty of genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, crimes against humanity, and violations of the laws and customs of war

Zdravko Tolimir - Life Imprisonment.

GUILTY

Zdravko Tolimir was the assistant commander for intelligence and security affairs of the Main Staff of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS). He was convicted on April 8, 2015, of genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, crimes against humanity, and violations of the laws or customs of war, and sentenced to life imprisonment.

He received the verdict with a smile on his face, making the sign of the cross. He passed away on February 8, 2016, while waiting to be transferred to the country where he was to serve his sentence.

Tolimir was found guilty of genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, crimes against humanity, and violations of the laws and customs of war. He is the third defendant before the ICTY to be sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with crimes committed in Srebrenica. This is the fourth case before The Hague Tribunal in which it was confirmed that genocide was committed in Srebrenica.

"Tolimir embraced the goals of the VRS and chose to be loyal to Mladić instead of his God and the law. In choosing Mladić, Tolimir lost his humanity and became the embodiment of the expulsion and destruction that occurred in Srebrenica" said prosecutor Peter McCloskey in his closing statement in this case.
